Trivia on Tap: Happy President's Day! To celebrate, we're wiping away the grime on a tall tale about President William Howard Taft. It's been said that President Taft got stuck in a White House bathtub and had to be buttered out, but that’s actually a myth. In fact, just after his election Taft had a custom porcelain tub installed that was big enough to fit four grown men! However, while he never got stuck, he did cause a bit of a plumbing catastrophe two years after his presidency ended. In July 1915, Taft was staying at a hotel in Cape May, New Jersey and over estimated the amount of water needed for the tub. When he got in, so much water was displaced that it trickled onto the heads of guests in the dining room below! The next day as Taft looked out onto the Atlantic ocean, he was quoted saying "I’ll get a piece of that fenced in some day, and then when I venture in, there won’t be any overflow," From clogged tubs to leaky pipes, we'll be sure to make sure your plumbing can handle a 'presidential' soak! The story goes that millions of fans, glued to their screens during the first half, all rush to the bathroom the moment the whistle blows. The fear is that this simultaneous "mega-flush" creates a surge so powerful it bursts pipes and overwhelms city sewers. It is a dramatic image— But luckily, it's also a myth! While it's true that water authorities monitor systems for these spikes, the "Super Bowl Flush" is a myth in that modern sewer systems are built to handle a massive volume. Even so, the water usage data is fascinating! Water authorities consistently record significant drops in water pressure and massive spikes in sewage flow exclusively during halftime and immediately after the game ends. It is one of the occasions that human behavior is perfectly synchronized by a television event. We celebrated our Lead Technician Zac's workiversary last week, and we thought it was the perfect excuse to turn the spotlight on him. In this issue, we’re sharing a special 'Insider Scoop' Q&A so you can get to know the person taking care of your tech a little better! Q: What is the one tool you absolutely could not do your job without? A: A tiny crescent wrench I keep in my pocket. It's fully adjustable so I can use it on EVERYTHING, water lines, taking apart faucets and shower heads, putting new blades on our saw, you name it! Q: What is your favorite type of job to work on? A: Trim outs (that's when we install all the fixtures in a bathroom) because you can make it look all fancy and nice Q: What's your go-to snack food? A: I'm a gummy kind of guy. Sometimes during work we'll stop at 7-11 and Will will get food but I'll just pick up a bag of gummies Q: What is your favorite local restaurant? A: It's not really local since it's a chain, but my wife and I love the half apps at Applebees. I'm open to suggestions if you have any though! Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? A: I'd have to say Sweden for the snow, I love snowboarding Q: If you were an animal, which one would you want to be? A: A Mouse. In the middle of the McCarthy era, Einstein felt that scientists and scholars faced unwarranted scrutiny and admired the freedom professions such as plumbers and peddlers retained.
